You Might Know Us...

We live in an older home and most of the rooms do not have overhead lighting. This makes choosing the right lighting crucial for function, in addition to it simply being beautiful.

We’re Erin & Matt

Sharing my step by step tutorial of a super popular Serena & Lily stool dupe. Or you could call it my IKEA Bekvam stool hack. I recently shared the process in my stories over on IG and it was VERY well received… so I decided to give this DIY a permanent home on the blog.

Okay, we have all seen the uber adorable Serena & Lily dip dye-two tone stools, right!? They’re super popular and chic. The problem is they’re pricey and I have a hard time bringing myself to shell out that much dough for a stool. Insert the Bekvam stool for $19.99 at IKEA. *tap image to shop either stool.

SO… I made this:

Into a version of this…

SUPPLIES

1- Bekvam Stool from IKEA

2- Early American Stain by Minwax (or stain color of your choosing)

3- Chantilly Lace Paint in matte by Benjamin Moore (or paint color of your choosing)

4- Clear Coat by Varathane (or clear coat of your choosing)

5- Painters Tape

6- Warm Soapy Water

7- Towel

8- Rags for stain

9- 2 Paint brushes- 1 for paint & 1 for clear coat

STEPS

1- Take warm soapy water and scrub the stool clean, get any oil from finger prints or dirt off

2- Dry well with the towel

3- Take your painters tape and tape off any areas you do not want to coat with stain

4- Apply stain keeping thicker and wet while applying and once fully coated wipe dry. Use rags for this process. We did 2 coats of stain.

5- Let stain dry for an hour just to ensure solid coat soaked in before you have to tape over it for white paint.

6- Use painters tape to tape off the clean lines that will create the two- tone effect on legs. Tape of any portions of stain you want to protect from white paint.

7- Paint the remaining portions of stool with your white paint. We did 2 coats. Let dry a couple hours before applying the clear coat.

8- Apply clear coat, we did 2 coats and let dry 1 hour between coats.

9- Let clear coat set up and cure for 24 hours before using the stool.

YOU’RE DONE

This low budget, no power tool required, DIY is one anybody could tackle and customize to fit the style of your own spaces. The customizable factor is my favorite part of this easy Serena & Lily dupe!

Happy DIY-ing

Erin
